How do digital literacy activities build community?

  1. I think that digital literacy activities build community by opening up a forum for group discussion. For example, digital literature circles are a great way to build community by having students discuss a piece of literature together and sharing responsibility in analyzing the piece. I also think that something like the Thematic Braiding or PSA activities allows for students to see different themes that run through a piece of literature and to get others' point of views on what may be controversial issues. I think that simply hearing what others think and accepting someone else's opinion is a great way to build community between people. These types of activities get students talking about real-life life issues instead of simply writing and handing in personal papers based on literature that perhaps only the teacher reads.
